For many of us, the distinctive look and sound of Grado headphones are instantly recognizable. But how did this iconic Brooklyn-based company come to be, and what’s the story behind the headphones that have captivated audiophiles for decades? Grado Labs has a rich history, rooted in a passion for audio innovation and a commitment to American manufacturing, all starting from humble beginnings in a family fruit store.

The Vision of Joseph Grado

The Grado story begins with Joseph Grado, a master watchmaker with a keen ear and an inventive spirit. In 1953, Joseph left his job at Tiffany & Company and Sherman Fairchild to pursue his passion for audio. He started Grado Laboratories in Brooklyn, New York, initially working from his kitchen table. The company's first foray into the audio world was not headphones, but phono cartridges. Joseph Grado invented the first stereo moving coil phono cartridge, a significant innovation at the time, and built up Grado's lineup of these essential turntable components. His dedication to quality and meticulous craftsmanship, honed by his watchmaking background, laid the foundation for the company's future success. In fact, Joseph Grado was so respected in the industry that he was inducted into the Audio Hall of Fame in 1982.

A Family Affair and a Shift to Headphones

While Joseph Grado was the visionary founder, the company's trajectory was also shaped by his nephew, John Grado. John first joined Grado Labs in 1965 at the young age of 12, sweeping floors and learning the business from the ground up. He spent years training with his uncle and eventually took over the day-to-day operations in 1975. Joseph Grado officially handed over the reins of the company to John in 1990, marking a significant transition. Under John Grado's leadership, the company began to focus more heavily on headphones, a move that would define Grado's modern identity. This family-centric approach, with John's sons Richard, Matthew, and Jonathan now involved, ensures the continuation of Grado's legacy as a family-owned business.

The "Grado Sound" and Brooklyn Manufacturing

From its inception, Grado Labs has been synonymous with a distinct sound signature, often described as lively, engaging, and energetic, with a strong emphasis on the mid-range. This "Grado sound" is partly a result of their design philosophy, which has historically favored open-back constructions. This design choice contributes to a more natural, spacious, and less fatiguing listening experience for many. Crucially, Grado has maintained its commitment to manufacturing in Brooklyn, New York, for over 60 years. This dedication to local production is a core part of their identity, setting them apart in an industry often dominated by overseas manufacturing. Nearly all of Grado's products, from their iconic headphones to their cartridges, are still hand-built in their Brooklyn facility.

Evolution and Innovation

While Grado is known for its heritage and consistent sound, the company hasn't shied away from evolution. Over the years, they’ve introduced various headphone series, including the Prestige, Professional, and Reference lines, each offering different levels of performance and refinement. The Prestige Series, for instance, often serves as an accessible entry point into the Grado sound, while higher-end models explore more exotic materials and advanced designs. Even in the face of changing listening habits, Grado has remained committed to wired headphones, believing there will always be a place for them. However, they have also cautiously embraced new technologies, eventually introducing their first wireless headphones, the GW100, demonstrating a willingness to adapt without compromising their core principles.
