The Beginnings: Joseph Grado and the Birth of Grado Labs

Grado Labs is one of the most revered names in high-fidelity audio, known for its handcrafted headphones and legendary phono cartridges. But its story begins with a single man: Joseph Grado. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1924, Joseph came from humble beginnings and started his career as a watchmaker. The precision and craftsmanship required in horology later became the foundation of his approach to audio engineering.

Joseph’s journey into the world of audio began when he joined the audio division of Saul Marantz, a pioneer in high-fidelity sound. His work in turntable cartridges quickly gained recognition, leading him to establish Grado Labs in 1953. Operating out of his family's home in Brooklyn, Joseph Grado built his company around the belief that the best audio equipment should be handcrafted with precision and passion.

The Phono Cartridge Era

In its early years, Grado Labs focused exclusively on designing and manufacturing high-quality phono cartridges. Joseph’s innovative designs set new standards for analog playback, and his work earned him a place in the Audio Hall of Fame. By the 1970s, Grado Labs had produced millions of cartridges, making it a dominant force in the industry. However, as turntables gradually gave way to digital formats, Joseph realized the need to pivot into new markets to ensure the company’s future.

The Move to Headphones: The HP1000 Series

In the late 1980s, Joseph Grado turned his attention to headphones, applying his decades of expertise in audio engineering. His first creation, the HP1000 series, was a revelation. These headphones, built with milled aluminum housings and hand-matched drivers, set a new benchmark for neutrality and precision. The HP1, HP2, and HP3 models were among the most respected headphones of their time, prized by audiophiles and studio professionals alike.

Joseph was deeply involved in the design and assembly of the HP1000 series, ensuring that every component met his rigorous standards. The HP1, in particular, featured polarity switches that allowed users to optimize their listening experience. These headphones remain highly sought after today, often fetching high prices on the second-hand market.

The Prestige Series and the John Grado Era

In 1990, Joseph Grado retired and handed over the company to his nephew, John Grado. Under John’s leadership, Grado Labs expanded its lineup with a new range of headphones that maintained the company’s core values while making high-fidelity audio more accessible. The Prestige Series was born, offering audiophile-grade sound at a more affordable price.

The Prestige Series included the SR60, SR80, and SR125, which quickly became favorites among budget-conscious audiophiles. Their lightweight, open-back design provided an airy and detailed sound signature, and they retained Grado’s tradition of handcrafted quality. Over the years, the series expanded to include higher-end models like the SR225 and SR325, each refining the Grado sound signature.

The Evolution of Grado: The “i,” “e,” and “x” Generations

Grado Labs continued refining its designs through multiple generations of improvements:

The “i” Generation (2008-2014)

With the introduction of the “i” generation, Grado implemented upgraded drivers and new materials, subtly improving the overall performance of their headphones. The RS1i and RS2i introduced richer tonality, while the GS1000i expanded the Statement Series with a larger soundstage and enhanced bass.

The “e” Generation (2014-2021)

The “e” series was a more significant upgrade across the entire lineup. Every model received newly designed drivers, optimized materials, and improved build quality. The RS1e and PS1000e stood out as some of the best headphones the company had ever produced. This period also saw the rise of Grado’s limited edition models, such as the Heritage Series and the Hemp Headphones, showcasing the brand’s ability to innovate while staying true to its roots.

The “x” Generation (2021-Present)

The latest evolution, the “x” series, brought the most comprehensive set of refinements yet. The new drivers improved dynamics and resolution while maintaining the classic Grado sound. The introduction of the GS3000x and RS1x demonstrated the company’s continued commitment to high-end craftsmanship. Additionally, Grado expanded into wireless audio with the GW100x, offering an open-back Bluetooth headphone experience.

Limited Editions and Special Collaborations

Grado has a long history of releasing limited edition models, often crafted from unique materials such as Brooklyn maple, cocobolo wood, and whiskey barrel oak. These special editions not only provide distinctive sonic characteristics but also appeal to collectors.

Some of the most notable limited editions include:

  • Heritage Series (GH1, GH2, GH3, GH4): Experimenting with different types of wood for unique tonal properties.

  • Hemp Headphones: Made with compressed hemp, offering a warmer sound signature.

  • Fashion & Brand Collaborations: Partnerships with brands like John Varvatos, Dolce & Gabbana, and Reebok.

  • Liquor Barrel Editions: Crafted from reclaimed whiskey and brandy barrels for both aesthetic and sonic appeal.

  • Artist Collaborations: Special editions made in collaboration with musicians like Billy Joel, John Mayer, and James Taylor.

Joseph Grado’s Legacy

Even after retiring, Joseph Grado’s influence remained deeply embedded in the company. His emphasis on handcrafted quality and commitment to excellence defined the Grado brand and its continued success. Joseph’s philosophy was simple: “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth overdoing.”

His passing in 2015 marked the end of an era, but his contributions to the world of audio endure. Grado headphones remain a benchmark for audiophile sound, proving that great craftsmanship and innovative engineering never go out of style.

Looking Ahead

Grado Labs continues to evolve, blending tradition with innovation. The company remains a family-run business, with Jonathan Grado now playing a key role in expanding its reach. While the future may bring new technologies and wireless advancements, the core philosophy of Grado—craftsmanship, authenticity, and passion for sound—remains unchanged.

For those who have ever put on a pair of Grado headphones, Joseph Grado’s vision lives on in every note, every instrument, and every song. His legacy is not just in the products he created, but in the community of audiophiles who continue to celebrate and appreciate the Grado experience.
