The Grado Signature S550, announced in March 2026, is the fourth model in the modern Signature Series. It combines 50 mm S2 dynamic drivers with Brazilian walnut housings, B cushions and a detachable cable. Introduced at $995 in the US, it provides a more accessible entry into the Signature family, with a tuning Grado describes as warm and relaxed.

Modding Potential
Grado announced the S550 on 3 March 2026, with demonstrations scheduled for CanJam NYC on 7–8 March and shipping planned for later that month. It joined the HP100 SE, S950 and S750 in the modern Signature Line. Its 50 mm S2 driver platform also appears in the S750, but the S550 is tuned specifically for its wooden enclosure.
The earcups are made from Brazilian walnut, with natural grain differences between pairs. The headphones weigh 335 g without the cable. Their leather headband uses a flexible metal support, engraved metal gimbals, stainless-steel height rods and controlled cup rotation. The supplied Signature Silver cable connects to each cup through a 4-pin mini XLR socket; its standard source plug is 3.5 mm, with a 6.3 mm adapter included. These detachable connections make cable replacement possible without opening the housings.
Grado describes the S550 as warmer and more forgiving while retaining the speed, detail and openness associated with its headphones. The manufacturer also emphasizes spatial presentation and natural dynamics, specifying THD below 0.2% at 100 dB. This summary reflects Grado’s stated tuning goals. Cushion choice is part of the acoustic design: impressions made with the supplied B cushions should be distinguished from impressions using other pads. As an open-back model, it is best considered for listening where sound leakage and limited isolation are acceptable.
Pad and cable swaps are the most straightforward reversible changes. Grado lists compatibility with its S, F, L and G cushions in addition to the supplied B pads. Different pad shapes change fit and the relationship between the driver and ear. Alternative cable lengths and terminations are available, including options for balanced outputs. For aftermarket cables, confirm the connector wiring as well as the plug type. Fit of replacement headbands and gimbals should be checked specifically for the Signature assembly.
Collectibility and Reception
Grado presents the S550 as a regular member of the Signature Line, with no numbered production limit announced. At its $995 US launch price, it sits below the S750, S950 and HP100 SE. Its place in a collection is therefore about its walnut construction and particular tuning, rather than an advertised limited production run. Auditioning with the intended cushions is a useful way to judge its appeal.
The S550 brings wooden housings, replaceable cables and several cushion options together in Grado’s most affordable Signature model at launch. For comparison within the encyclopedia, explore the Grado S950 and HP100 SE.
